A comparative study of clinical manifestations, haematological and serological responses after experimental infection with Anaplasma phagocytophilum in two Norwegian sheep breeds Organic Eprints
Stuen, Snorre; Grøva, Lise; Granquist, Erik G; Sandstedt, Karin; Olesen, Ingrid; Steinshamn, Håvard.
Background: It has been questioned if the old native Norwegian sheep breed, Old Norse Sheep (also called Norwegian Feral Sheep), normally distributed on coastal areas where ticks are abundant, is more protected against tick-borne infections than other Norwegian breeds due to a continuously high selection pressure on pasture. The aim of the present study was to test this hypothesis in an experimental infection study. Methods: Five-months-old lambs of two Norwegian sheep breeds, Norwegian White (NW) sheep and Old Norse (ON) sheep, were experimentally infected with a 16S rRNA genetic variant of Anaplasma phagocytophilum (similar to GenBank accession number M73220). The experiment was repeated for two subsequent years, 2008 and 2009, with the use of 16...

Administration of Silver Fir (Abies alba Mill.) to goats and its potential to control gastro-intestinal parasites Organic Eprints
Heckendorn, F.; Giebler-Schubert, F.; Walkenhorst, M.; Fertig, O.; Hamburger, M.; Potterat, O.; Valle-Zárate, A..
Gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) substantially impact on goat health. Because of the widespread development of GIN, resistant to allopathic drugs, further research into alternative parasite control methods is required [1]. Silver fir, Abies alba MILL (SF), is traditionally used by Swiss farmers in order to control GIN infections of goats but also to improve animal welfare. A survey among goat farmers revealed that goat farmers use SF in winter during a period of approximately five months. The SF-ration per animal and day differ between approximately 8.2 g dry matter (DM) to 600 g DM [2]. As there is scientific evidence neither for an anthelmintic potential nor for the feed intake and milk performance of SF, we conducted a study with 30 goats. For a 20...

All ull er verdifull.
McKinnon, Kirsty; Lennon, Alana; Andresen, Berit Langdahl.

Alpha-linolenic and linoleic acid in meat and adipose tissue of grazinglambs differ among alpine pasture types with contrasting plant speciesand phenolic compound composition Organic Eprints
Willems, H.; Kreuzer, M.; Leiber, Florian.
The special quality of foods from alpine grazing systems concerning their fatty acid (FA)composition is well established. However, the contribution of different specific vegetationtypes and the animal’s genotype to this alpine effect is still unclear. In the present study, the FA profiles of muscle and adipose tissue lipids were determined in lambs that hadgrazed either an intensively managed lowland pasture or one of three characteristic alpinevegetation types differing in plant species number and composition, forage quality andamount, and composition of phenolic compounds and FA. On each vegetation type and intwo subsequent years, two groups of lambs (seven Engadine sheep, ES; and seven ValaisianBlack Nose sheep, VS) grazed for 9 weeks and were...

Alpine vegetation type affects composition of nutritionally important C18 fatty acids in tissues of lambs from different breeds Organic Eprints
Willems, H.; Kreuzer, M.; Leiber, F..
A total of 110 lambs of the breeds Engadine Sheep and Valaisian Black Nose Sheep were fattened on one lowland and three different alpine pasture types. The experiment was conducted in two consecutive years and lasted for 9 weeks of grazing in each year. Immediately afterwards, the lambs were slaughtered. Perirenal adipose tissue and the Longissimus dorsi muscle were analysed for fatty acid composition. The lambs on the lowland pasture had the lowest proportions of linoleic and α-linolenic acid in the lipid fraction of these tissues. Additionally, there was a clear differentiation in these proportions when lambs grazed different alpine vegetation types. This was related to the content of phenolic compounds rather than the fatty acid contents of the swards,...

Alternating grazing to control parasites in young cattle (Video) Organic Eprints
Alföldi, Thomas.
Within the CORE Organic project MIX-ENABLE, Steffen Werne (FiBL) and his team are testing more sustainable ways of controlling gastrointestinal nematodes in ruminants. Farmers usually control parasites by using dewormers. However, resistance against these products is increasing. One approach is mixed grazing of different livestock species. It is well known that sheep and goats can benefit from mixed grazing with cattle in terms of animal health and performance. This is because gastrointestinal parasites are usually specialized in one livestock species, and mixed grazing has thus a “diluting” effect. Conversely, little is known whether young cattle can also benefit from mixed grazing with sheep. This is what Steffen Werne and his teams want to find out...

Recent results have shown that tanniferous plants might represent an alternative option to chemical drugs to control parasitic nematodes of the gastrointestinal tract in small ruminants since some anthelmintic activity has been associated with the consumption of the plants. The 2 main objectives of the project are : 1 to understand the mechanisms explaining the activity of tannin rich plants against nematode parasites of sheep and goats 2 to identify novel natural resources to exploit for non chemical control of parasite in various farming systems, including organic farming. In particular, the project focus on potential industrial agroressources In vitro and in vivo assays on parasites and on infected animals to measure the...

Alternative forage crops for finishing lambs Organic Eprints
McLean, Barbara.
Alternative forage crops offer a number of benefits for farmers including a cheap finishing system for lambs, benefits for soil condition, fertility building for rotations and providing a cover crop. Certain forages have also been demonstrated to have some anthelmintic benefits for lambs. A demonstration study was undertaken to investigate the potential of six crops used in the horticulture industry (fertility building crops) as forage crops for weaned growing lambs. The crops include white mustard, Nemat (form of Rocket), Crimson Clover, Sweet Clover , Caliente 119 and Caliente 99 (Cruciferae). The grazing field was split into three blocks and two crops were sown in solid strips in each block. Each block also had grass headlands. 10 ewe lambs were...

Alternative management strategies to prevent and control endo-parasite diseases in sheep and goat farming systems - a review of the recent scientific knowledge Organic Eprints
Rahmann, Gerold; Seip, Hannah.
Infestation with gastro-intestinal nematodes (GIN) in small ruminants can cause server economic losses and endanger animal welfare. The development of organic farming systems, the increased public awareness for drug residues in agricultural products and the development of resistant strains of parasites have enforced the search for sustainable alternatives. The aim of this review is to summarise the current scientific knowledge of alternative strategies to prevent and control endo-parasitic diseases in sheep and goat farming systems. Many scientific studies and projects have shown big discrepancies between results obtained under in vitro and in vivo conditions. Often research has been carried out under clinical conditions for extended periods before...

Anfälligkeit für innere Parasiten bei Schaf und Ziege im Hinblick auf Rassen- und Herdenunterschiede Organic Eprints
Heckendorn, Felix.

Animal health strategies in organic and conventional meat sheep production Organic Eprints
NICOURT, C.; BENOIT, M.; LAIGNEL, G.; CABARET, J..
Sixteen meat sheep farms (nine conventional and seven organic) in the centre of France were surveyed to evaluate their economic and production performances (previous interviews) and their strategies related to animal health with particular attention to internal parasites (present interview on health strategies). The organic farms were surveyed in mid-September 2006 and the conventional ones in October 2007. Each interview (1½ or 2 h) included a visit of the farm (with the collection of faeces for evaluation of internal parasites), followed by an open discussion on sheep production and health problems, and parasitic infections, in particular. The discussion was recorded and then transcribed into a word processor file and analysed. The farmers agreed on the...

Anthelmintic effect and intake dynamics of oak (quercus spp.) and walnut (juglans regia) foliage in goats Organic Eprints
Heckendorn, F.; Lèbre, A.; Destailleur, V.; Bouy, M.; Spiegler, V.; Lehmann, S.; Hensel, A..
Oak and Walnut are both of ethnoveterinary importance, especially for anthelmintic treatment of ruminants [1,2]. H2O and EtOH-water (1:1) extracts of oak and walnut foliage were used for phytochemical profiling and for in vitro assays with Caenorhabditis elegans and gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN). Oak extracts contained mainly tannins, walnut extracts were dominated by flavonoids. Oak EtOH extract caused significant lethal effects in adult C. elegans (LC50 1.5 mg/mL); motility of GIN L3 larvae was reduced by the EtOH extract but at substantially higher concentrations. Egg hatching was inhibited by both, the oak H2O and EtOH extract. In vivo: 42 lactating Alpine goats carrying natural GIN infections were allocated to 3 feeding groups: oak, walnut and...

Antioxidant effects of ryegrass phenolics in lamb liver and plasma Organic Eprints
López-Andrés, P.; Luciano, G.; Vasta, V.; Gibson, T.M.; Scerra, M.; Biondi, L.; Priolo, A.; Mueller-Harvey, I..
Sixteen lambs were divided into two groups and fed two different diets. Eight lambs were stall-fed with a concentrate-based diet (C), and the remaining eight lambs were allowed to graze on Lolium perenne (G). The antioxidant status was measured in the liver and plasma samples before and after solid-phase extraction (SPE) to probe the antioxidant effects that grass phenolic compounds may have conferred onto the animal tissues. The liver and plasma samples from grass-fed lambs displayed a greater antioxidant capacity than the tissues from C lamb group, but only if samples had not been passed through SPE cartridges. Finally, the feed and animal tissues, which had been purified by SPE, were analysed by liquid chromatography combined with mass spectrometry...

Antiparasitic activity of chicory (Cichorium intybus) and its natural bioactive compounds in livestock: a review Organic Eprints
Peña-Espinoza, Miguel; Valente, Angela H.; Thamsborg, Stig M.; Simonsen, Henrik T.; Boas, Ulrik; Enemark, Heidi L.; López-Muñoz, Rodrigo; Williams, Andrew R..
Increasing drug resistance in gastrointestinal (GI) parasites of livestock and concerns about chemical residues in animal products and the environment are driving the development of alternative control strategies that are less reliant on the use of synthetic drugs. An increasingly investigated approach is the use of bioactive forages with antiparasitic properties as part of the animal’s diet (nutraceuticals) or as potential sources of novel, natural parasiticides. Chicory (Cichorium intybus) is a multi-purpose crop and one of the most promising bioactive forages in temperate regions, and numerous in vivo trials have explored its potential against parasitic nematodes in livestock. However, it is unclear whether chicory can induce a direct and broad activity...

Assessing a treatment on the basis of an individual or a group. An example: the homeopathic treatment of digestive-tract strongyles in sheep Organic Eprints
TABEL, J.; SAUVE, C.; CORTET, J.; TOURNADRE, H.; THOMAS, Y.; CABARET, J..
Homeopathic treatments, widely used in organic farming, remain unevaluated. Assessment is difficult since the individuals that respond to treatment are not identified, although it is central to the concept of homeopathic treatment. Classifying lambs into those to be treated (since they have high parasitic infection rate or poor production performances) or that should remain untreated (in other words, even when treated, they will not benefit from treatment) is not simple. The identification of lambs to be treated can be based on parasitological examinations (eggs per gram of faeces), clinical (anaemia or diarrhoea)or production-related (weight gain) results. The classification of lambs was a posteriori and based on dendrograms using UPGMA (unweighted...
